METHOD 03 · AIRPORT PAVEMENTS

Ground-penetrating radar for airport pavement inspection

A complete map of the pavement structure, to schedule maintenance before defects appear at the surface.

THE METHOD

How it works

The same technology as for roads, applied to large areas. A GPR antenna array mounted on a vehicle travels over the runway, taxiway or apron in parallel passes, giving a continuous image of the inside of the pavement.

Measurements are positioned to the centimetre by GNSS. Processing provides layer thicknesses, anomaly maps and structure homogeneity indicators, calculated so that zones can be compared with one another.

WHAT IT IS FOR

The problems the method solves

  • Know the actual structure of the pavement: layer thickness, continuity of interfaces.
  • Spot voids, potentially wet zones and delamination before surface failures, which are costly and take the runway out of service.
  • Highlight heterogeneous or weak zones and rank them.
  • Feed an airfield pavement management system (APMS) with objective data.
  • Check reinforcement or rehabilitation works.
WHAT YOU RECEIVE

The results we deliver

Thickness and structure

Maps of layer thickness and interface continuity over the whole inspected surface.

Internal defect maps

Voids, potentially wet zones and delamination, located and ranked, to define the zones to confirm and treat.

Relative indicators

Structural homogeneity map and prioritisation indicator: relative values that allow zones to be compared with one another, not absolute measurements.

Reference practice: ICAO Annex 14 and Doc 9157; ASTM D4748.

HOW TO USE IT

What this changes for your decisions

  • Maintenance planning that prioritises zones according to their actual condition, with an estimate of their area.
  • A credible technical file for funding partners, who ask for structural diagnostics before financing rehabilitation.
  • A baseline to measure the evolution of the pavement from one campaign to the next.
  • An inspection without long closure of the runway, which can be scheduled during closure windows.
OUR EQUIPMENT

The equipment selected

IMPULSERADAR · RENTED (GEOREVA)

Raptor 3D

Multichannel GPR array mounted on a vehicle, also used for roads.

At a glance

  • Raptor-45 version: 18 channels, centre frequency 450 MHz (range 225–625 MHz)
  • Wide swath covered on each pass
  • Fast acquisition: large areas are inspected in a short time

Why this choice

Runways are measured in tens of thousands of square metres. A multichannel array covers a wide swath on each pass and greatly reduces the time on site compared with a manual GPR.

EMLID · GNSS RTK

Emlid Reach RS3

Precision GNSS receiver that provides a position for each measurement.

At a glance

  • Centimetre-level positioning with RTK
  • Grid of parallel, repeatable passes

Why this choice

It allows the measurement to be repeated at the same place in the next campaign and the real evolution of the structure to be compared.

Equipment selected for our first campaigns, being acquired, rented or provided through partnerships depending on the instrument; availability is confirmed when the order is placed. Characteristics as stated in the manufacturers' data sheets; they depend on configuration and terrain.

LIMITS

What the method does not do

  • The runway must be accessible to the vehicle; we plan the intervention with the operator.
  • Homogeneity and prioritisation values are relative to the inspected surface: they rank zones against each other, but do not give a load-bearing capacity.
  • Very thin layers require a higher frequency, which we choose according to the objective of the mission.
